Weather Impact Investigation in Indonesia (WIN-ID) Project

Location: Indonesia

The Weather Impact Investigation in Indonesia (WIN-ID) project addressed the need for science-based concepts to support the paradigm shift towards impact-based forecasting (IBF) and early warning services in Indonesia. Indonesia started implementing the Weather Ready Nations (WRNs) program in 2018 with the support of the U.S. National Weather Service-International Activities Office and the U.S. Agency for International Development/Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance, in partnership with the Hydrologic Research Center.

To develop the IBF System and increase forecasters’ capacity, BMKG initiated and encouraged research regarding the impact of weather on the environment and social aspects in Indonesia. The WIN-ID initiative encouraged research in the social sciences to inform decision-making in the physical sciences, with new products for aviation and spatial sciences and the development of new strategies for flood vulnerability mapping. Science-based solutions inform decision-making, improve product quality, increase accuracy, and develop more suitable impact-based forecasts. Presented here are a selection of the best research papers presented at the WIN-ID conference.
